Ratnas

All kinds of herbs were cast into the ocean and fourteen Ratnas (gems or treasures) were produced from it and were divided between the Asuras and the Devas. Though usually the Ratnas are enumerated as 14, the list in the scriptures ranges from 9 to 14 Ratnas. Most lists include: According to the quality of the treasures produced, they were accepted by Shiva (because of consuming the poison), Vishnu, Maha Rishi's (for Kamadhenu or Surabhi), which was given by Vishnu, the Devas and the Asuras.

There were three categories of Goddesses which emerged from the ocean;
Lakshmi: the Devi of Fortune and Wealth, who accepted Vishnu as Her eternal consort.

Apsaras: various divine nymphs like Rambha, Menaka, Punjisthala etc., who chose the Gandharvas as their companions.

Varuni: taken - somewhat reluctantly (she appeared dishevelled and argumentative) - by the Asuras.

Likewise, three types of supernatural animals appeared:
Kamadhenu or Surabhi (Sanskrit: kāmadhuk): the wish-granting cow, taken by Brahma and given to the sages so that the ghee from her milk could be used for Yajna and similar rituals.

Airavata and several other elephants, taken by Indra.

Three valuables were also produced:
Kaustubha: the most valuable ratnam (divine jewel) in the world, worn by Vishnu.

Parijata: the divine flowering tree with blossoms that never fade or wilt, taken to Indraloka by the Devas.

Additionally produced were;
Chandra: the moon which adorned Shiva's head.

Dhanvantari: the "Vaidya of the Devas" with Amrita, the nectar of immortality. (At times, considered as two separate Ratna)

This list varies from Purana to Purana and is also slightly different in the Ramayana and Mahabharata

Lists are completed by adding the following Ratna:
Shankha: Vishnu's conch

Mangalagiri

The temple tank is known as the Lakshmi Pushkarini. Legend has it that this pushkarini was created by the Gods, combining the waters from several holy rivers of the land, and that Mahalakshmi (who came out of the milky ocean when it was churned by the gods and the asuras), bathed in this pushkarini and married Vishnu thereafter.

Lord Shiva showed himself as Ksheeraramalingeswara and showed the child
  1. ksheerasamudra(ocean of milk),
  2. Ghrutasamudra(ocean of ghee),
  3. Amruta sagara(Sea of immortality), and
  4. lots and lots of tasty food.
Upamanyu was out raged in happiness seeing his Lord Shiva and Maa Paarvathi on Nandivaahana and worshipped them with joy and happiness.This was also a joyous moment for all the dieties and they showered the boy and Lord with flowers and sweet music. Upamanya was delighted and knelt before Lord and prąyed. Lord Ksheeraramalingeswara lifted the child with love and affection and kissed him and told Maa paarvathi that the child would be their son from that moment and assigned the boy with the leadership to all ganas(ganadhipathi).Maa Parvathi blessed him with a boon of being young throughout his life and offered the child Ksheerasamudra in the form of a ball. Lord Ksheeraramalingewara blessed Upamanyu with all the boons like the Ksheera samudra and all the tasty food that was with him.He also blessed the child with immortality and capacity to do Sambhavi vrata and Paasupata vrata. Lord was not satisfied with all the boons he gave to the child and asked for any other boon he wanted. Upamanyu innocently replied that inspite of all the boons he was given he would not be free from this worldly relations without complete and permanent devotion towards his Lord Shiva and asked Lord to stay with him and protect him throughout his life. Lord Shiva was happy and fulfilled the request of his child. From that moment He stayed there as Ksheeraramalingeswara with Maa Paarvathi and this place is called Ksheerapuri and now as Palakollu.

Ashwatthama

When Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison during the churning of the ocean, the poison started burning his throat. The 'vish purush', personification sprang out of Lord Shiva and the Lord blessed him with a boon. Lord Shiva granted him the boon that the vish purush would be born on earth as the son of Drona and would kill all the oppressive Kshatriyas. Thus the vish purush was born as Ashwatthama.

Amirthakadeswarar

Kallapillayar During the churning of the milk ocean to extract the Nectar, the Devas stole a bit without the knowledge of anybody and without praying to Lord Ganapathy and hid it in a secret place. To teach a lesson to Devas for ignoring him in their haste, Lord Vinayaka simply changed the place of the Nectar pot. When they searched for it, they could not get it back. Lord Shiva advised the Devas to apologise to Lord Vinayaka to get back the nectar pot. After getting the pot, the Devas went for a bath. When they returned, they could not get the pot. It has become a Shivalinga. And that Shiva Ling is Amirthakadeswarar, the presiding deity of Thirukadayur.

Jasmine
Jathi Malli When Markandeya was performing Abisheka to Lord Amirthakadeswarar with Ganga Water, Ippinjilam flowers too came with the water. Ippinjilam is a flower also called Jathi Malli (Jasmine that blossoms throughout the yea).) This flower is used only for the God and should not be used for human purposes. An archana with a single flower is considered equal to 1008 archanas.

Foam Deity of Ganesh

Legend has it that the Devas, forgot to worship Lord Ganesha before starting to churn the "Paarkadal". Hence, they were only able to get the Alakala Poison out of it. Later Indra, the king of Devas realised that, it was because they did not worship Ganesha before starting their mission. Lord Indra created this idol out of the foam (Kadal Nurai) and during his penance at Swamimalai, set the image down at Tiruvalanchuzhi, after which it became rooted to the spot.
